Kijkend naar de plannen en de samenstelling van 'Kabinet Schoof', moeten we vrezen dat dit kabinet geen grote veranderingen gaat invoeren. Het wordt dus helaas nog een tijdje doormodderen. En die tijd hebben we eigenlijk niet! Daarom is het nieuwe boek van Guus Berkhout zo welkom, omdat hij helder aangeeft welke grote veranderingen er noodzakelijk zijn om de gigantische problemen van nu op te lossen. Niet morgen, maar vandaag!

Berkhout puts a stop to the can't-can't culture in The Hague and speaks about the great need for us to say goodbye to the cheese-slicing policy of the old politics and focus on solutions that work. A new cabinet must have a clear vision about the future of our overcrowded country, he says. Do we remain in charge in our own country or do we let Brussels officials determine our lives? How will the Netherlands earn its money in the future? How do we get rid of the benefits and allowance circus? Will we finally stop with those catastrophic climate stories and those unaffordable energy projects? And above all, do we have the courage and ingenuity to stem the disruptive influx of asylum seekers?

Berkhout geeft duidelijke antwoorden op al die grote vragen. Hij laat zien dat er met de voorgestelde systeemveran­dering ('Thorbecke 2.0') een veel eenvoudiger Nederland ontstaat, met veel minder bureaucrati­sche regels, een kleine competente en loyale ambtenarij, minder verspilling in de zorg, een zinvol klimaat- en energie­beleid, een beheersbare asielinstroom, en vooral heel veel meer gemeenschaps­zin (‘oranjegevoel’).

In the new Netherlands outlined by Berkhout, our young people will again receive first-class vocational training and our entrepreneurs will once again have the space to do business. After all, without entrepreneurs and a well-educated labor force, there will be no productivity growth and without productivity growth there will be no preservation of prosperity!
